Part-time Barista, folio café

Job Description

  • Part time – approximately 15 hours per week on average, 3 to 5 hires
  • Anticipated start date: August 30, 2021 with training shifts starting earlier in August

Located in Marpeck Commons, folio café is part of Canadian Mennonite University.  We prepare and serve coffee, tea, small meals, pastries, and gelato. At folio café, we’re in pursuit of quality and comfort. We want our customers to enjoy high quality food and drinks while relaxing in a comfortable environment gazing out at CMU’s beautiful campus. We are passionate about fairly traded coffee and tea, as well as locally sourced food from independent producers. We are looking for friendly, engaging, customer service minded staff. Training on espresso and tea drinks will be provided. All staff members are expected to show an interest in developing their skills preparing both coffee and food. We offer a promising and secure position with opportunities for development and individual responsibility.

Treating our suppliers, ingredients, and customers with respect underpins all we do here. Our performance expectations for a barista are:

  • Provide impeccable customer service
  • Be detail oriented and willing to put in time and energy to make excellent espresso, coffee, and tea drinks
  • Maintain a clean and organized bar and café space
  • Be punctual, tidy and clean in appearance and practice
  • Work in a small team to prepare and serve beverages, gelato, and small meals
  • Attend cuppings and training sessions when conducted
  • Prepare, assemble, and serve meals
  • Open and close out daily sales as required
  • Professional at all times and in all situations
  • Follow safe work practices
  • Other related work assignments
  • Act as a representative of folio café and Canadian Mennonite University at all times

Physical Demands

  • Frequently is required to stand, walk, sit; use hands to handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; and stoop, kneel, and crouch
  • The employee must be physically able to lift and/or move heavy objects

Qualifications

  • Possess a high level of attention to detail
  • Eager to learn and build on your skills
  • Like being creative and can be resourceful
  • Show interest in developing knowledge of food, coffee, and customer service
  • Visibly enjoy working in a high volume sales setting and can work effectively and efficiently at all times
  • Able to follow a recipe and learn basic cooking and food service skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build relationships
  • Self-motivated, able to work independently, in a team environment and under direction
  • A willingness and availability to work irregular hours including evenings and weekends
  • Experience working in specialty coffee would be an asset
  • Be supportive of CMU’s mission, purposes and programs
