Full-time Director of Finance

Job Description

Reporting to the Vice President, Administration & Finance, the Director of Finance leads the Finance Department and takes primary responsibility for the university’s financial operations. This important leadership role in the university includes overseeing financial reporting, monitoring the effectiveness of financial systems and controls, ensuring regulatory and tax compliance, and administering the annual budget process.

Responsibilities

Supervision

  • Provide leadership and supervision to the Finance Department and ensure the effectiveness of all major functions: financial accounting and reporting, student billing and collection, payables and receivables, and payroll accounting
  • Provide mentorship, training, and support to members of the Finance team

Reporting and internal controls

  • Prepare financial statements in accordance with Canadian Accounting Standards for Not-For-Profit Organizations (ASNPO)
  • Coordinate the preparation for the year-end audit and liaise with external auditors
  • Ensure the completion of all internal and external financial reporting
  • Ensure the appropriateness of internal controls over financial processes, financial reporting and regulatory/policy compliance, and recommend new or revised internal controls as required
  • Provide training and orientation regarding financial policies and procedures to members of the university community

Budget administration

  • Administer the university’s annual budget process
  • Provide budget reporting and support to internal departments and administrative units
  • Ensure compliance with financial policies and recommend revisions to policy as needed

Treasury

  • Manage the university’s cash, foreign exchange contracts, credit cards, and payment services
  • Manage the university’s relationships with banking and lending institutions
  • Administer the university’s investments portfolios

Qualifications

  • A commitment to the Christian faith, the church and the mission of CMU
  • CPA designation and relevant work experience
  • Excellent knowledge of ASNPO and ability to recommend appropriate policy choices
  • Knowledge of internal control frameworks and experience managing control activities
  • Strong organizational capacity and a proven ability to delegate appropriately
  • Ability to manage diverse priorities and multiple deadlines
  • High level of professionalism and demonstrated service-oriented perspective
