Job Description

Position Title:            Senior Pastor

Reports To:                 Visioning Board, Membership

Position Overview

  • Provide spiritual and general oversight of the congregation
  • Lead the preaching and teaching ministry of the church
  • Lead overall worship planning at the church
  • Cultivate community connections and outreach
  • Work with the Congregational Care Committee to provide pastoral care
  • Attend all Visioning Board meetings as ex officio member
  • Provide guidance to all other church committees as called upon
  • Provide a personal plan for professional development on an annual basis


Position Qualifications/Competencies/Gifts

  • Mature Christian character, humility, and demonstrated love for God and the church
  • Servant-leader as described in John 13; 1 Peter 5: 1-4; I Timothy 3 and Titus 1
  • Committed to the Mennonite Brethren Confession of Faith and to living a lifestyle consistent with that Confession of Faith
  • Active member of a Mennonite Brethren church (preferred)
  • Gifted in collaborative leadership
  • Able to cast vision
  • Takes initiative; delegates wisely
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills to relate well with all members of the church and members of the community
  • Preferred education: post-secondary degree aligned with position expectations
  • Marketplace experience is an asset
  • Ability to build a positive working environment (Team builder, motivator, encourager)
  • Understanding of non-profit governance and structure as it relates to the senior pastor and Crossroads Mennonite Brethren Church Visioning Board roles and relationship
  • Christ-centred worldview that is current and informed; has a growing understanding of our society’s culture, church culture, and a willingness to discover how to lead Crossroads Mennonite Brethren Church into the future


Position Responsibilities

  1. Spiritual and general oversight of the congregation
    • Vision – work with the Visioning Board and the congregation to develop the vision for the mission of God in and through Crossroads Mennonite Brethren Church
    • Collaboration – develop a good working relationship with all church leadership; includes the Visioning Board and the leadership of all other Boards and Committees.
    • Administration – preparing, leading, delegating and coordinating church activities on as needed basis. Coordinate the work of the church at large
    • Promotion – advocates for and support for church programs


  1. Preaching and teaching ministry of the church
    • Remains faithful to Scripture and the gospel
    • Motivates and challenges the church to spiritual growth
    • Preaches and teaches consistently with our Mennonite Brethren Confession of Faith
    • Oversees the instruction of baptismal and membership candidates
    • Promotes mentoring relationships within the church
    • Challenges the congregation in the practice of Christian disciplines


  1. Cultivate Community Connections and Outreach
    • Is involved with and supports Winnipeg community organizations – is active in and aware of the work of Winnipeg community organizations
    • Demonstrates leadership and motivates the church leadership and membership in friendship evangelism and community outreach
    • Assists in organizing and developing the church’s witness
    • Encourages an outward focus; pastor and members are involved in outreach
    • Disciples new believers and delegates the discipleship of new believers
    • Engages with Mennonite Brethren conference and MB partner agencies


  1. Provide pastoral care in concert with the Congregational Care Committee
    • Available to the membership and attendees for pastoral care
    • Works with the Congregational Care Committee to mobilize pastoral care
    • Provides support and care to church leaders
    • Helps members identify and use their gifts


  1. Worship planning
    • Take responsibility for overall worship planning of church services and speakers
    • Work cooperatively with Worship Committee and other leaders in worship planning
    • Administer the ordinances
    • Initiate planning of special services and celebrations as needed/inspired
    • Available in the planning of weddings, funerals, etc.

  • Preaching and teaching including sermon preparation             30%
  • Community connections and outreach 25%
  • Providing pastoral care 25%
  • Professional development (outside of sermon preparation) 10%
  • Attendance at meetings 10%
